SENSORY SENSITIVITY

..

WHAT ARE THE MOST HELPFUL THINGS WE CAN DO?

FOR CHILDREN

  • We need to recognise that when a child has been traumatised or neglected, they can have either bad experiences that are sensory or not enough positive experiences and that makes them sensitive. They can be more in need of things that make them feel safe- such as blankets, soft toys, ear defenders, something to chew on, a warm drink, a quiet space, a space to make lots of noise. They may also react dramatically if they aren’t able to access these things quickly.

    FOR ADULTS

  • It’s the same for adults. Having a cup of tea or a soft seat can be a treat for some people but for others it can symbolise safety and being ok. We need to get to know those in church and maybe save them a sat at the back/ front/ side where they can easily escape. Maybe we need to have a comfy seat, blanket, ear defenders or something ready for them so they feel known and cared for when they arrive.

The most important thing is that they are not made to feel an inconvenience or a problem but are helped to find what they know feels safe so they can enjoy being part of a church community.
